Box launches KeySafe customer-managed encryption

The introduction eliminates the need for companies to use a dedicated hardware storage module (HSM)

Box has launched KeySafe, an all-in-one customer-managed encryption solution that will offer users flexibility and enhanced security protection, the company explained.

It means customers can take control of their file security in the cloud, whether they are using AWS or any other cloud service alongside their Box cloud storage.

The independent key control solution means customers maintain their encryption keys, without giving access to Box or any other third party, thereby meaning they remain in charge of security for their business. Additionally, businesses are able to keep control of their key policies and usage logs to ensure only authorised employees can access encrypted data.

Aaron Levie, co-founder and CEO of Box, said: “Today, we’re making customer-managed encryption easier to deploy and more cost-effective than ever before, further raising the bar for security in the cloud.”

Although Box Enterprise Key Management (EKM) has existed for a year now for AWS alongside a dedicated hardware storage module (HSM), this new service offers an all-in-one proposition to ensure companies can maintain control without dedicated HSMs.

"The cloud has transformed how companies of every size, all over the world operate and interact with their employees, customers and partners,” said Terry Wise, AWS' vice president of worldwide partner ecosystem.

“Security is a top priority for us and the global enterprises relying on AWS. We’re thrilled to see Box expand the use of AWS’s security offerings to provide customers with a robust encryption key management solution through the AWS Key Management Service integration that’s affordable, easy to manage, and designed to meet the highest levels of security and regulatory compliance.”
