HP bundles PCs with Box cloud storage

Despite questions hanging over HP’s PC business, the company is pushing full steam ahead with this new partnership.

HP is partnering with Box to provide business customers cloud storage alongside their PC purchases.

The companies revealed the tie-up this week, which will give users two options for special Box storage deals – if they buy one of the desktops selected by HP.

The first offer is available to purchasers of either the HP Compaq Pro 6005 or 6200 Series PC. Each desktop will come with a free corporate 10GB Box account – double the normal capacity – and the option to upgrade at a discounted price.

The second deal comes with the HP Compaq Elite 8200. Customers will receive an unlimited storage Box account for free, but only for one year.

“More than 100,000 businesses use Box, ranging from SMBs to Fortune 500 companies like Procter & Gamble, but we’re just getting started,” wrote Karen Appleton, vice president of business development at Box, on the company’s blog.

“Working with HP, the largest PC maker in the world, is a tremendous opportunity to bring an integrated HP and Box experience to new businesses of all sizes, across all industries.”

However, HP is aiming it fully at the SMB market, placing all the information about the deal on its HP Small & Medium Businesses site. This is unsurprising, as HP has its own public cloud storage offering in private beta, which is likely to be aimed squarely at the enterprise when it launches in 2012.

Stephen DiFranco, senior vice president and general manager in the Americas of the Personal Systems Group (PSG) at HP, gave the scheme is full backing though, claiming it would help towards better business collaboration in the cloud.

“Our customers are entering a new era of data management and storage, and they need a simple, cost-effective way to collaborate and share information in the cloud,” he said.

DiFranco then hinted these wouldn’t be the only desktops getting the Box cloud treatment, adding: “HP’s broad range of PCs plus Box’s scalable service provides the desirable security, functionality and features to meet the needs and budgets of our customers.”
